Johns Hopkins Depression and Alcohol Use Study Seeking Research Participants

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University are seeking people with depression who also drink alcohol regularly to participate in a study looking at the effects of psilocybin, a substance found in many kinds of mushrooms. The study will investigate psychological effects of psilocybin, including whether or not it can help with depression and drinking. Participants will be compensated up to $1,080 for completing this study.

Here’s what happens during the study:

  • You would come to Johns Hopkins Bayview about 16 times over 7 months

  • We will follow-up with you for about 3 months to track depressive symptoms and alcohol use

  • Two of these visits would be “capsule administration days” which take a full day

  • You would meet with therapists several times before and after these capsule administration days.

  • Blood tests will be performed.

  • Some visits can be done online.
